This panel had participation from internal and external stakeholders and demonstrate the use of tools and techniques to effectively communicate factors that inform decisions. The desired outcome was to effectively communicate how risk is evaluated at complex sites, highlight holistic site level approaches that are protective of human health and the environment, and incorporate policy and technical concerns related to achieving alternative end points. This discussion included existing decision-making tools in conjunction with case studies.

An educated workforce has always been a key foundation to accomplish our missions. But as our missions have evolved, the specifics for education have evolved as well. This was the first in a series of three panels that reviewed how STEM has evolved over the past 50 years, what STEM may look like to support our industry’s future, and how we can get there. Educational curricula have evolved over time to meet the changing needs of industry as well as the perceptions of each generation. This panel provided different generational perspectives and experiences, and explored how education and STEM education specifically, has evolved over the past 50 years.

This was the second in a series of three panels focusing on STEM. This panel reviewed our current STEM focus and look to what future STEM requirements will be to support emerging missions in both legacy cleanup and a net-zero environment. To keep pace, STEM must have a heavy focus in areas like Artificial Intelligence, robotics, machine learning, modularization, and virtual reality.Our slate of panelists discussed our industry’s evolving needs and how STEM education must change to support future missions.

This was the third in a series of three panels focusing on STEM. Ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified workers for our industry will require talent from various educational and training pathways – from associate, undergraduate, and advanced degrees, to trade apprenticeships and technical schools with career-focused programs. Our panel included leaders from diverse STEM-based programs who shared how their programs currently feed into our industry and how those programs are evolving to keep pace with changing requirements and priorities.

This session focused on how to do business with DOE and its industry partners.  The session provided an overview of the DOE mission, marketplace, and current opportunities as well as best practices and resources to increase small business preparedness and participation.  The session also included updates on the DOE OSDBU equity procurement actions to increase opportunities and awards to Small Disadvantaged, Women-Owned, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned, and Historically Underutilized Business Zone small businesses.  Lastly, the session included updates and a listening session on the DOE Mentor Protégé Program.

This session focused on several current and emerging NRC regulatory issues impacting the radioactive waste arena. The panelists provided different perspectives on several key issues including the revision to 10 CFR Part 61 and regulatory aspects of decommissioning and uranium recovery.

These sessions focused on the US DOE Carlsbad Field Office and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and the National TRU Program and was comprised of separate panel sessions on a) TRU Waste Disposition, b) WIPP Regulatory Update, c) National TRU Program Central Characterization Capabilities, and (d) WIPP Infrastructure. Because WIPP is a key component of the US DOE Environmental Management (EM) cleanup strategy, these panels provided current information on TRU waste cleanup.

This session focused on challenges and lessons learned in radioactive waste packaging, transportation, compliance and receipt for fabricators of radioactive waste packaging. Participants provided their perspectives and suggestions on how to increase efficiencies through eliminating inconsistencies between specifications and other requirements to provide products at a reasonable cost and enhance communication to enable better service.
026: Panel: Updates on DOE Implementation of Hanford Tank Waste R&D Roadmap (R9.14) 4 Articles

This session focused on the Hanford Washington Tank Waste R&D Roadmap. It provided updates on the DOE EM’s implementation, in collaboration with the Office of Science and ARPA-E, of the Network of National Laboratories for Environmental Management and Stewardship (NNLEMS)'s R&D Roadmap. The effort is aimed at developing breakthrough technologies for reducing the life cycle cost and accelerating the schedule for completing the tank waste cleanup at the Hanford Site.
